Resin coasters make brilliant gifts and are a satisfying first resin project. With a silicone mould, some epoxy resin and a few pretty fillings, you can create a set that looks shop-bought.
What you'll need
- A silicone coaster mould
- Two-part epoxy resin (resin + hardener)
- Mixing cups and wooden stirrers
- Fillings: dried pressed flowers, glitter, gold foil flakes or shells
- Nitrile gloves and a protected work surface
Safety first
Work in a well-ventilated room, wear gloves, and keep resin away from children and pets. Always follow the instructions on your resin's packaging.
Step 1: Measure and mix
Measure resin and hardener in exactly the ratio stated on the bottle (often 1:1 or 3:1). Stir slowly for 3–5 minutes, scraping the sides, to avoid bubbles.
Step 2: Pour a base layer
Pour a thin layer into each mould cavity. Pop any surface bubbles by gently passing a lighter or heat gun over the top.
Step 3: Add your fillings
Arrange dried flowers face-down (they'll be the top once demoulded). Sprinkle glitter or press foil flakes into the resin with a cocktail stick.
Step 4: Top up and cure
Pour the rest of the resin to fill the mould. Cover loosely to keep dust off and leave on a level surface for 24–48 hours.
Step 5: Demould and finish
Flex the silicone mould to release each coaster. Sand any sharp edges lightly and stick felt pads on the back to protect your furniture.
