Artificial flowers and plants are perfect for dark corners, busy households and anyone without green fingers. The trick is styling them so they look natural. Here's how.
1. Choose realistic varieties
Plants with naturally waxy leaves, like eucalyptus, olive, palms and succulents, look the most convincing. Look for stems with slight colour variation and visible veins on the leaves.
2. Shape every stem
Faux stems arrive flat from packing. Gently bend each leaf and petal outwards and vary the angles so they don't look uniform.
3. Mix heights and textures
Combine a tall focal stem, some medium flowers and trailing greenery. Odd numbers (3, 5, 7 stems) look more natural than even ones.
4. Use a real-looking container
Ceramic vases, woven baskets and terracotta pots instantly make faux plants more believable. For potted plants, cover the base with moss or small pebbles.
5. Put them where real plants would grow
A plant on a sunny windowsill looks natural; one in a windowless hallway can look odd. Place greenery where light would realistically fall.
6. Keep them dust-free
Dust is the biggest giveaway. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth or use a hairdryer on the cool setting once a month.
Styling ideas by room
- Living room: a large faux palm in a basket beside the sofa
- Kitchen: a small pot of faux herbs on the windowsill
- Bathroom: trailing ivy on a shelf (no watering in a humid room)
- Hallway: a vase of seasonal stems on a console table
