A small kitchen can work just as hard as a big one; it just needs smarter storage. These ideas are cheap, quick and mostly renter-friendly (no drilling needed).
1. Decant into clear, stackable containers
Half-empty packets waste space. Clear, stackable containers let you see what you have at a glance and stack neatly to use the full height of your cupboards.
2. Use the inside of cupboard doors
Over-the-door racks and adhesive hooks turn wasted space into storage for foil, cling film, chopping boards and tea towels.
3. Add a second shelf
Freestanding shelf risers double your cupboard space for plates, mugs and tins.
4. Get things off the worktop
A wall rail with hooks holds utensils, mugs and small pans. A two-tier countertop organiser keeps oils and spices tidy in one corner.
5. Organise drawers
Drawer dividers and cutlery trays stop the jumble. A draining cutlery holder by the sink saves drawer space altogether.
6. Go vertical in the fridge
Clear fridge bins group similar items together so nothing gets lost at the back.
7. Label everything
Simple labels on containers and shelves help everyone in the house put things back in the right place.
A 30-minute kitchen reset
- Empty one cupboard completely.
- Throw away anything out of date.
- Group what's left by type.
- Put everyday items at eye level, rarely used items at the top.
- Repeat with the next cupboard next week.
